10 Tips for a successful Family Portrait session
Family Portrait sessions are an opportunity to capture special moments and create lasting memories with your loved ones. This is my 15th year as a Family Photographer, and over the years and at this point, I have it down to a science.
I know preparing for a photo session with kids in tow can sometimes feel like a daunting task. That’s why I’ve compiled these 10 tips to help parents navigate the process and ensure a smooth and successful photo session, even if I wasn’t able to get you on my schedule this year. So here they are:
10 Tips for a successful Family Portrait session
1. Choose the Right Time: Select a time for your photo session when your children are well-rested and in good spirits. Avoid scheduling sessions during nap times or close to meal times to minimize the chances of meltdowns. However, in the summer the sun sets later, so inevitably the sessions are typically scheduled later. A later nap in the day would help wonders in this case. The alternative is harsh sun, or limiting the session to an area with open shade. Another alternative is schedule the session in the fall when the sun sets earlier and aligns better with bed time.
2. Coordinate Outfits Ahead of Time: Plan and coordinate outfits for the entire family in advance. Choose complementary colors and styles that reflect your family’s personality while ensuring everyone feels comfortable and confident. My go-to will never to have each family member “match” but rather coordinate in muted/earthy colours. Loud distracting colours can take away from the session entirely. Once your session is booked I will send you a what to wear guide that aids in the process of choosing outfits. We can also set up a complimentary wardrobe consultation.
3. Bring Snacks and Drinks: Pack plenty of snacks and drinks to keep your little ones happy and energized throughout the session. Opt for mess-free snacks and spill-proof containers to avoid any wardrobe mishaps.
4. Communicate Expectations: Talk to your children about what to expect during the photo session. Explain that it will be a fun opportunity to take pictures together as a family and encourage them to cooperate with the Photographer. This is my absolute favourite part of the session! I always manage to get those genuine laughs out of your littles.
5. Be Flexible: Keep an open mind and be flexible during the photo session. Embrace the unexpected moments and go with the flow, allowing the photographer to capture authentic and candid momentsDurham Region Toronto Family Photographer. I loooove to capture the candid moments. We do a mixture of both!
6. Bring Props or Toys: Consider bringing along props or toys that can help keep your children engaged and entertained during the session. Favorite toys or stuffed animals can serve as comforting companions and help elicit natural smiles.
7. Relax and Have Fun: Stay relaxed and enjoy the moment with your family. Smile, laugh, and interact with each other naturally, allowing me to capture genuine expressions and emotions.
8. Trust Your Photographer: Trust in the expertise of your Photographer and follow their guidance throughout the session. They have the skills and experience to capture beautiful images and will provide direction to ensure a successful outcome.
9. Embrace Imperfection: Remember that perfection is not the goal of a family photo session. Embrace imperfections and cherish the genuine moments shared with your loved ones, knowing that these are the memories you’ll treasure most.
10. Plan a Reward: Reward your children for their cooperation and good behavior during the photo session. Whether it’s a special treat or a fun activity afterward, having something to look forward to can help motivate them to participate and make the experience enjoyable for everyone. In the studio I have a “surprise treasure chest” that kids can choose from and it really does make it a special event for them!
By following these 10 tips, parents can prepare for a smooth and successful family photo session that captures the love, joy, and connection shared between family members. With careful planning, communication, and a relaxed attitude, you’ll create beautiful memories that will be treasured for years to come.
I look forward to working with you soon!
Sincerely,
Stephanie
