10 Tips for a successful Family Portrait session

Family Portrait sessions are an opportunity to capture special moments and create lasting memories with your loved ones. This is my 15th year as a Family Photographer,  and over the years and at this point, I have it down to a science.

I know preparing for a photo session with kids in tow can sometimes feel like a daunting task. That’s why I’ve compiled these 10 tips to help parents navigate the process and ensure a smooth and successful photo session, even if I wasn’t able to get you on my schedule this year. So here they are:

10 Tips for a successful Family Portrait session

1. Choose the Right Time: Select a time for your photo session when your children are well-rested and in good spirits. Avoid scheduling sessions during nap times or close to meal times to minimize the chances of meltdowns. However, in the summer the sun sets later, so inevitably the sessions are typically scheduled later. A later nap in the day would help wonders in this case. The alternative is harsh sun, or limiting the session to an area with open shade. Another alternative is schedule the session in the fall when the sun sets earlier and aligns better with bed time.

2. Coordinate Outfits Ahead of Time: Plan and coordinate outfits for the entire family in advance. Choose complementary colors and styles that reflect your family’s personality while ensuring everyone feels comfortable and confident. My go-to will never to have each family member “match” but rather coordinate in muted/earthy colours. Loud distracting colours can take away from the session entirely. Once your session is booked I will send you a what to wear guide that aids in the process of choosing outfits. We can also set up a complimentary wardrobe consultation.

3. Bring Snacks and Drinks: Pack plenty of snacks and drinks to keep your little ones happy and energized throughout the session. Opt for mess-free snacks and spill-proof containers to avoid any wardrobe mishaps.

4. Communicate Expectations: Talk to your children about what to expect during the photo session. Explain that it will be a fun opportunity to take pictures together as a family and encourage them to cooperate with the Photographer. This is my absolute favourite part of the session! I always manage to get those genuine laughs out of your littles.

5. Be Flexible: Keep an open mind and be flexible during the photo session. Embrace the unexpected moments and go with the flow, allowing the photographer to capture authentic and candid momentsDurham Region Toronto Family Photographer. I loooove to capture the candid moments. We do a mixture of both!

6. Bring Props or Toys: Consider bringing along props or toys that can help keep your children engaged and entertained during the session. Favorite toys or stuffed animals can serve as comforting companions and help elicit natural smiles.

7. Relax and Have Fun: Stay relaxed and enjoy the moment with your family. Smile, laugh, and interact with each other naturally, allowing me to capture genuine expressions and emotions.

8. Trust Your Photographer: Trust in the expertise of your Photographer and follow their guidance throughout the session. They have the skills and experience to capture beautiful images and will provide direction to ensure a successful outcome.

9. Embrace Imperfection: Remember that perfection is not the goal of a family photo session. Embrace imperfections and cherish the genuine moments shared with your loved ones, knowing that these are the memories you’ll treasure most.

10. Plan a Reward: Reward your children for their cooperation and good behavior during the photo session. Whether it’s a special treat or a fun activity afterward, having something to look forward to can help motivate them to participate and make the experience enjoyable for everyone. In the studio I have a “surprise treasure chest” that kids can choose from and it really does make it a special event for them!

By following these 10 tips, parents can prepare for a smooth and successful family photo session that captures the love, joy, and connection shared between family members. With careful planning, communication, and a relaxed attitude, you’ll create beautiful memories that will be treasured for years to come.

I look forward to working with you soon!

Sincerely,
Stephanie

LIAM G | TORONTO HEADSHOT PHOTOGRAPHER

I am so pumped to be delivering Liam and his dad this gallery. Liam’s dad contacted me when they were looking for a Toronto Headshot Photographer and found me on Instagram. We chatted  about Packages and Pricing and availability and they decided to move forward with the session. His dad sent me a few photos of Liam before our session, just from his phone, so I already knew he was a cutie. But, I had no idea his headshots would turn out like they did.

DURING OUR SESSION

Liam was so chatty during his session and he challenged me to a few races (I lost) in between locations. You may not believe he’s only 6, but it’s like he was born for the acting and modeling industry. He had so much stamina, for a child of any age, let alone 6. He  took the direction very well, and was a pleasure to work with.

When you’re working with young children as a headshot Photographer, It’s important to give them frequent breaks. After all, even the IPA and Actra mandates this. The current rules state that after every 45 minutes of filming they need a 10 minute break for the 6-11 age group.  I love coming up with creative ways to keep the kids engaged too. Liam was able to keep his focus for a longer period of time than other kids his age, Since I started as a child and family photographer, kids don’t normally have to be in front of the camera in those circumstances as when they are getting headshots. When it’s headshots, it’s only them in front of the camera, so it’s an important reminder. I had to remind myself of his age and to ask him if he needed a drink or a break.

I have said it many times before, it’s beneficial for kids and families to work with someone who has experience with kids. Adults are a bit easier to work with and can be less choosey when selecting a headshot photographer. But working with kids is special, and this is an adult industry. Kids should be treated with respect and care. After all, this is the only industry in North America that children are allowed to “work”. My own kids have worked with several very talented Artists, Photographers, Directors and others on set, that you could tell had no experience with minors or minors. It showed. It doesn’t matter what their previous work looks like, if they don’t have a friendly manner and ease around children, they shouldn’t be working with them.  You know a great Director or Photographer within the first minute of meeting them.

Here are just some of the outdoor headshots we got of Liam recently. Congratulations buddy! I know you will do great things!

KIDS HEADSHOTS IN TORONTO | KAILA

I first met Kaila’s mom, Mary, when our kid’s did a Macdonld’s commercial together. The kids had so much fun together on set, we kept in contact. When Mary was looking for kids Headshots in Toronto, said she knew just who to call.  Kaila is Represented by Kamera Talent in Toronto, and we had so much fun together creating some new looks for her fresh new start.

During the session, Kaila was a lot of fun, sometimes kids just know things, almost as if they know what you’re thinking, telepathically. At least that’s how it felt. That, or she was born for this. I always tell my client kiddos, every time you hear two clicks on the camera, change it up. Change your look, your smile, your hand placement, or whatever it may be. Just go with it and have fun. If the kids don’t know what to do next, I’m happy to jump in and direct them, but for the most part, we just let kids be kids and go with it.

DIFFERENT LOOKS ARE NEEDED

It’s important to capture different looks as well. One for commercials, this is usually a great big smile or smirk. Both closed and open mouth smiles. The other look is for tv and film submissions, your Agent will use these shots to submit for roles to land you an audition. We do both lighter and darker images for these with a ton of variation of expressions. I direct more with these images more than the commercial looks. We try to aim for a leather jacket look for the t/v film series of shots, like the one below.

Being in the Acting Industry, kids are usually outgoing, and want to be in front of the camera. This surely rang true for Kaila. Sometimes this can differ from portrait photography or family photography if the kids aren’t used to having their photos taken. The important part is to make kids feel at ease, and nothing is ever too silly, or  not correct. Kids are encouraged to just be themselves, and that’s when the magic happens.

WARDROBE INCLUDED

Kaila is borrowing some items from the studio wardrobe for her session, complimentary of course! Your Headshot package includes a wardrobe consultation, and we discuss what you’ll be wearing and the looks we want to achieve.  I also send my clients a what to wear guide to make it easy and ensure the focus stays on your child while looking their best.

I work with a few Agents in the GTA, please ask your Agent if they are on my preferred Agent’s list, for a booking bonus!  If they aren’t ask them to get in touch and I can add them to the list!

NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER DURHAM REGION | WELCOME EMMETT MILO

NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER DURHAM REGION | WELCOME EMMETT MILO –  This little cherub was a couple of weeks old when his parents booked in a newborn session, for our “Petit Package”. For the last decade I have been fortunate enough to capture these first few moments of a baby’s life, and create works of art that families cherish for a lifetime. After having been a newborn photographer for the last 13 years, nothing phases me.

Don’t worry if baby isn’t cooperating. I got this!

I’ve been pooped on, peed on, puked on, you name it. I have to say, only 3 reschedules were needed – and they were cousins – boys lol! If you’re baby is having a rough day (they may be tiny but they have big feelings), no problem, come back another day. But Emmett wasn’t giving us any trouble at all. He was so snuggly, and not only was he sleepy (while I love a sleepy baby, it doesn’t bother me if they don’t sleep), he was a champion baby. Zero fuss, ate like a champ, just a little peach pie. I truly was sad when the session was over.

My time with you and your new bundle is very laid back. Sessions are all baby led. This means, if baby is happy we are happy. We go with the flow, and make sure baby is comfortable. I don’t offer poses where baby is holding their own head up sitting up. I know it’s done as a composite, I just don’t think it looks natural. Although I can do the pose, in the last 7 years, since switching to natural posing, no-one has requested it.  Here is a small example of what my sessions look like of just baby. Of note: I do include family posing as well, with any package and baby Emmett did get to take some photos with his parents who love him beyond measure.

FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER IN DURHAM REGION | HAGONG FAMILY SUMMER 2023

FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER IN DURHAM REGION – The best part of my job is seeing the kids grow up as repeat clients. While I love all my clients, repeats are of course my favourites. You’re probably thinking, yea, of course, more business! However, while I am grateful for the business, I genuinely love spending time with them and getting to know them a little more each session. The Hagong family first came to me when their daughter Alyanna was born, and then again when Aiden was born – and of course all the milestone’s and Christmases in between. It’s been a pleasure working with this family and I cannot wait to see them again.

Our session date had the Most Gorgeous Light. We set out to my fave spot down by the lake. It’s about 10 – 12 minutes from me. Not too bad of a commute. Honestly, I’d drive forever to use this location. I use to use the Scarborough Bluffs so much, until I came across one too many times of high water and no parking, then I called it quits.

HOORAY FOR NEW LOCATIONS

It’s nice to get out of your comfort zone. I searched forever on google earth to find my go to spots now and I’m so much happier. Not only are the closer to me, but I have spots in every town in Durham, south and north for clients who want to be closer to them, and for the repeats who don’t want to go to the same place twice.

Being a repeat client, mom was given several outfits  from our studio wardrobe for her and the bebe’s to try on over the weekend. It’s easier this way so you can see them in the comfort of your home, and take your time trying them on. Plus – it’s no charge to you. No more spending money on outfit’s you’ll only wear once. If you’re a first time client, don’t worry – I will bring everything to the shoot, or you can stop by and try them on here on a scheduled date.

Isn’t this the sweetest family? Gah!! Gorgeous family, gorgeous clothes, gorgeous light, gorgeous everythiiiiiing.
