DURHAM REGION PHOTOGRAPHER | THE GOULET FAMILY

DURHAM REGION PHOTOGRAPHER | THE GOULET FAMILY – Ok, so I admit it. Posting on social media has taken a complete 180. Being a mom of 2, with kids in Acting, Competitive dance, Music lessons and sports, it’s hard to keep with with ALL the things in life on the to-do list. I’m sure every mom in my circle of friends and those reading this blog can agree. Even if their day to day activities differ from mine.People are generally busier nowadays. If you’re a new parent, you’re up in the night, awake in the day, and a teeny tiny person completely person depend son you 24/7. Parents of toddlers, lol… need I say more… they don’t really stop. And kids a bit older like mine (6,8), have activities, school work and trying to squeeze in some quality family time while running my business, something HAS to give. And so my fall by the wayside is Social Media posting.  I am choosing sleep (the 7 hours I get a day) over it.

I absolutely LOVE my job, and my clients. So in order to give them and my family the attention they need and deserve, this is the least important. Which is a bit sad, because I love sharing my work. It gives new potential clients a look at my work that I’m proud of. Perhaps I should hire a Social Media Intern?

Which brings me to why on earth I am so late on posting this Spectacular family in Winter when we shot in Fall. Meet the Goulet Family. I have been photographing them for years, and each time gets better and better. We met at one of my selected locations in Durham Region, and had so much fun making the kids laugh. This session was done in less than an hour and mama had a hard time choosing (now I know why she wanted a mini 😂). They remind me of the family that comes in the photo frame. Much love to you guys and thanks for choosing me each year! xo

The Snow Family | Durham Region Family Photographer

The Snow Family | Durham Region Family Photographer – I honestly enjoy photographing every family session I have with my clients. Even the fussy kids. Not lying. However, when you photograph a soul like Maverick’s, you know you’ve hit the Photography Jackpot, each and every time. I have been lucky enough to photograph this beautiful family for the first time on a memorable day for them. Each year, they return again the following summer. I try to keep things fresh for them. I’m going to have to do some location scouting for 2019 because we have used all my favourite spots over the years. This years location was the same as the first years, but we used different areas so you wouldn’t think they were in the same spot. I like that. Recently, I went for a drive and stumbled upon a lakefront location right here in Courtice that I think we will use next year.

I keep urging his mama to get Mav into acting and modelling. He has such a big personality and is a great listener. He takes direction so well (even when he has to do it twice, Right Meg 😉 and his dimples could be famous alone. I’ve been following his mama on social media for a while and I predict a future up and coming athlete. I can’t wait to watch him grow in the years to come. He’s definitely the one to watch. Just. you. wait.

The L Family in Port Perry | Newborn Photographer Durham Region

The L Family in Port Perry | Newborn Photographer Durham Region – I was so lucky to photograph this beautiful family in their Port Perry home.  When clients inquire about an in home session I am always so excited, I love lifestyle images so much. I wanted to mention in this post for clients who don’t want all their images candid, that we do both candid and poses for in home sessions. Much like my in -studio sessions. I find each sessions needs both, partly because I like to have both for my own sessions, so it’s only naturally I shoot that way.

When I do in-home newborn sessions, I don’t need much from my clients. This family had a beautiful front window in their living room, so that was all the light I needed.  All the images Ruby and Eli below were done right in front of the window with my baby poser and my beautiful blankets. We did some family images throughout their living room as well that they will cherish as well.

To change it up a bit, I suggested we head outside for 20 mins to change the scenery. On the way to the backyard, I stopped in my tracks and asked the clients to sit on their front porch. I can’t imagine what they were thinking. “You want us to poses here??” I’m sure is what was going on in their heads. I often have a vision, and although clients may or may not see what I have in mind at the time, it always comes to light after they see their images in their proofing gallery.

Ruby and Eli were so easy to pose and work with at just under 4 years old and 5 months. Her little giggle and his little grin warmed my heart the entire time. Then again when I was editing them. I often get the clients who are absolute gems. I  love that these types of clients find me. Below are just a small sample of their images we shot that day. Enjoy! xx

How to Prepare for your Newborn Photography Session

How to Prepare for your Newborn Photography Session – I don’t know how many newborns I have photographed in my time as a newborn Photographer. I lost track a few years ago. What I do know is the tips I give clients are so super helpful. When clients follow the steps I give them, it makes for a happy baby, and an all around successful session. I wanted to share these tips with my fellow readers, future clients and the Photographers that are just starting out who are following my page along. I hope these tips that I have learned along the way are helpful to you.

Tip # 1 – Keep your baby awake at least 2 hours before your session time. I know – babies generally like to sleep, so easier said then done right?  Keep reading. If they sleep at home, they most likely won’t sleep well for the session. If I get a good half hour at the session of baby sleeping, that’s generally all I need to do the natural posing you see in my portfolio. I do enjoy an awake baby, especially when they make eye contact with the lens.

Tip # 2 – Bath your newborn the morning of your session. This also helps with tip #1. Bathing your baby can eat up a change of time for that 2 hour window above. I haven’t seen a newborn sleep through a bath before (I’m sure it’s possible) but if you bath your baby, chances are it’ll keep them awake. Comb their hair, shampoo, body wash, lotion up your baby. Like a mini spa. Pamper them, and that’ll help keep them awake. Plus they will be nice and clean for their session. The lotion will help alleviate any dry skin (I personally love the flaky skin, but that might just be me?).

Tip # 3 – No Socks. Nope, none. Socks are often fit to the baby’s foot, and leave the clothing crease lines that are a pain in the butt to edit out around the ankles. You don’t need them anyway (this brings me to the next tip).

Tip #4 – Sleepers are a yes. Dress them in a zippered or button down onesie that does NOT go over their head. Something easy to get off and on is perfect. You don’t need the socks if you have the footed sleeper. Sleepers come in all sorts of maternity, light if it’s hot and fleece if it’s cold. You could also do a onesie in the summer, just nothing over their head.

Tip # 5 – Don’t stress. If they fall asleep in the car on the way over. If you want to sit in the back seat and make silly faces at them on the ride to the studio, go for it. But it’s not necessary. They may fall asleep on the way over. That’s because they’ve been kept up for 2 hours 😉 So don’t worry. You’re going to dress them in a sleeper that’s easy to get off, and fingers crossed they stay asleep upon arrival. If you follow the next tip, we can get started right away if this happens.

Tip #6 –Feed Your Newborn Before your leave the house. Gah! so much to remember. I know. This is why some client’s prefer me to come to them. But not to worry, do your best, and if you need to feed baby for a top up before we start, that’s perfectly fine. We take breaks through the session to give baby food and snuggles for reassurance. If baby is awake when you arrive, you can fed baby if they will take it, or we will start with parent images or awake shots of baby if it’s a baby only session.  If I’m doing an in-home lifestyle session, ten start feeding baby 45 minutes before our session starts.

Tip # 7 – Bring lots of food. These tips just flow so nicely together don’t they? yes, they do. If you are nursing, you’ve got baby covered. If you are bringing bottles, I’d bring 4. You may think that sounds absurd, but I promise it’s not. In one session, mom brought 2, and her husband had to run to Shopper’s Drug Mart to grab more formula. Bring at least 4. You don’t know when they’re growth spurts will arise. I have a fridge in the studio, so they will stay good. Just transport them with a cooler and you’re good. I also have a bottle warmer in the studio too.

Tip # 8 – Take care of you too. New parents are often so worried about getting out the door on time they forget about themselves. Pack snacks or a lunch (I generally have at least a few snacks hanging around like granola bars etc) so when you’re hungry you can refuel. I have a Keurig with a bunch of specialty coffees and teas in the studio, as well as a fridge stocked with refreshments. So please help yourself. I also have access to a kettle and a microwave so if you bring your lunch, you can reheat it. Most new parents are only running on a few hours of broken sleep each night, so you need your food to keep you going. So, not only do you need to remember food for baby, but for you too (but I have your snacks covered if you forget).

TIP # 9 – Give yourself lot’s of time. In my new studio, parking won’t be an issue to find, but don’t forget to account for traffic. Plus my little check list will take some time to bath, come camera ready yourselves, gather dads clothing, feed baby, pack food.. etc. so try to get to bed at a reasonable time the night before, so you’re not AS tired in the morning to get moving.

Tip # 10 – Have fun. Our time together will most likely be something you remember for years to come. I remember both my kids newborns sessions so vividly. Every little pose and move they made, I was gushing over. You will too. Dads, if standing over your baby for every shot is not your thing (it’s cool if it is), then I have a nice comfy couch, a big tv, Wifi…. a nice cozy waiting room connected to the studio with double french glass doors to the studio so you can see everything. And moms, if you think that sounds great, you’re welcome to it as well. Also in the waiting room is a place for toddlers to play in. That way they don’t disturb the baby when we are doing the images of baby alone.

I hope you enjoyed my tips on How to Prepare for your Newborn photography Session. I hope to see you soon <3

Much Love,

Stephanie Webster – Durham Region Newborn photographer

How to Choose the Best Newborn Photographer for you

How to Choose the Best Newborn Photographer for you – I remember when I was searching for a Newborn photographer for my daughter (almost 9 years ago). The lists of opportunities were endless. I remember specifically typing into google “Durham Region Newborn Photography” and “Best Durham Region Photographer for Newborns”. How to choose the right one for me was a bit overwhelming when I didn’t have a referral. After all, I wanted them done within a couple of weeks after she was born, so I wanted to make they were going to handle my precious newborn with care. The pages were endless, so I started going through the pages, and reading all the websites.

I looked through all the portfolio’s, all the pricing, and reached out to a few. In the end, I settled on a referral from an old high school friend. I seen the photos she had posted on Facebook and even though it was of her older baby, I thought she would be able to handle newborn photos. First, we did a trial run. “If I’m going to book her for my newborn session”, I thought, “then we can do the Maternity photos first”.  It’s similar to when couples do the engagement portraits before they do the wedding. When I am asked to do engagements (not often anymore), I always encourage the couple to use their wedding Photographer if possible.

Back to the story –  I knew the first 2 weeks was going to go fast and we really only had 1 shot at this. By the time we would receive our proofs or images back from the newborn session, it would be too late to capture that new stage again. Well, I have to admit, although it was a referral, I am so glad we did do the maternity photos first. Her poses were unique, and she did have some great ideas, but the entire time I felt uncomfortable for a reason I couldn’t quite describe. She spoke very fast, and there wasn’t a calming thing about this lady. She only accepted cash, which I thought was unprofessional and a bit slimy if I’m being honest. I guess the whole experience made me a bit uncomfortable.

Fast forward to our newborn session. Since I did do my maternity photos late (lesson learned so I booked much further ahead for me son), by the time we received the maternity photos back, I knew we had to look for another newborn Photographer. I call this, better than than never to have found out.  In the end that lady that we did choose, Mary-Anne, we were much happier with. She was clam and very inspiring and the end was result was beautiful.

Here are some of the things I encourage you to ask when booking your newborn photographer

How long have they been in business? This is important. Are they a Professional or a hobbyist? Chances are if they are a hobbyist, they may or may not have photographed many newborns before yours. I have heard too many horror stories for this to be taken lightly. Newborn sessions are different than a family session, or even a baby session. Do they know the room heat has to be turned up to keep baby comfortable? Do they know how to safety pose them? How do they know that’s the correct way?

Now, don’t get me wrong, we all have to start somewhere.  So, if you want to help out an up and coming Photographer gain some experience, I think that’s amazing. I did quite a few free newborn sessions for people when I was starting out and it helped me gain experience.  I know I wouldn’t be offended if they had booked a professional with more experience as well.

How many Babies do they have experience working with at this age? Are they a registered business? This one baffles me all the time. So many “professional” Newborn Photographers aren’t even registered. So, they are either operating illegally, or … too lazy to register? I’m not quite sure, but neither can be good, nor professional.  Do they know what to do when baby is crying?

Here’s a true story: My fellow Photographer friend was photographing a newborn when the mom told her that the baby has a sore shoulder from delivery. My friend proceeded to photograph the baby as gently as she could without hurting the baby or making it uncomfortable. A little while into the session she noticed the baby was very uncomfortable on one side and certain poses the baby would cry. She immediately thought not to put baby into those poses. Turns out, the poor babe had a dislocated shoulder form birth! The mom had no idea, the Doctor’s didn’t say anything. Could you imagine if the Photographer kept posing the baby anyway? Trying to settle the baby while keeping them in the pose? Sadly, it does happen friends.

I honestly feel there is the right photographer out there for everyone. Do your homework and your research. Google reviews are a good way to determine how the Photographer is, for the most part. I encourage you to call up those inquiries, speak to them, ask questions. i know we are all busy, and sending an inquiry through the website is the fastest and easiest way to get pricing and availability. But beyond that, call them!

When I started my business, I was a new mom. I wanted to learn all about Newborn Photography. I took a newborn safety course with a Registered Physiotherapist (who was also a Newborn Photographer). This was my immediate stepping stone. Pose them safely. They are super delicate. I self taught A lot of myself the Photoshop part, but I did take courses at Seneca college on that matter too. Since then I have also taken 3 additional Newborn courses on posing safety after the first one.

Pricing – Be sure to understand that the saying “you get what you pay for” really does apply in this case. Always. All of our equipment here is top of the line, I use a Nikon D810, with top of the line ART and Nikkor lenses.

Style – This is something that will help you decide on. Do you like their work? I photograph very neutral, light and timeless colours. I want that image to be loved for years to come. If you use whites, greys, creams etc, it keeps the focus on the baby. And you can Print the images and it will be sure to go with any room in the house. I’m not sure how many Parents would enlarge a photo of their baby in hot pink frills and stick it in their family room? Unless of course that was their thing?

Some additional questions are: Do you do retouching? How long is the session? What methods of payment do you accept? (steer clear of cash only businesses).

If you are viewing this blog post, there is a good chance you may be expecting. If so, congratulations. I hope this Blog was helpful on Finding a Newborn Photographer in Durham Region area or anywhere for that matter. I’d love the opportunity to discuss with you the opportunity to Photograph your newborn. I lost count of all the newborns I have photographed, over 8 years it’s a very high number. I should count one day.

Please feel free to read my google reviews and reach out to me if you have any questions. 905-409-7833  https://www.stephaniewebster.ca
